Together with GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications - Rail), ETCS is part of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). ETCS is a system with which train movements on the railway network can be controlled and influenced. ETCS monitors, for example, whether a train is allowed to travel on a section of track as well as its speed. Similar to the safety systems already in use in Germany, the train is automatically stopped if the track is not cleared.
Technically, ETCS is a computer-based system that controls the interaction of train movement and driver permission in different ways depending on the functional level (Level).
